Why SolveStep

A math solver that shows you the method

Most calculators hand you a number and leave you exactly as confused as before. SolveStep breaks each problem into the moves a teacher writes on a whiteboard: what was done, to which side of the equation, and why that move was legal. That is what lets you check your homework, find the line where it went wrong, and get the next one right without asking anyone.

It runs entirely in your browser. There's no upload, no waiting on a server, and no account wall between you and your answer.

See how it works
01

Type your problem

Equations, expressions, fractions or a derivative, typed the way you would write them by hand.

02

Get the full breakdown

Every operation is shown in order, so you can follow exactly how the answer was reached.

03

Copy, check, and learn

Copy the solution into your notes, compare it to your own working, and spot where things diverged.

What it solves

Six math solvers, every topic covered

From algebra to matrices, each solver below is built for its own topic rather than one general engine stretched thin across all of them.

x

Algebra & linear equations

Solve for x in one move or in twenty. SolveStep isolates the variable and shows every rearrangement on the way.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a math solver?

A math solver takes a math problem (an equation, an expression, or a sentence describing one) and returns the answer along with the steps used to reach it. SolveStep is a free, browser-based math solver covering algebra, geometry, statistics, matrices, and calculus, showing every step instead of just the final answer.

Is SolveStep really a free math solver, with no sign-up?

Yes. The entire solver runs in your browser. There is no account, no paywall, and no cap on how many problems you work through.

Do I need to download a math solver app?

No. SolveStep works as a website in any mobile or desktop browser, so there is nothing to install. To make it open like an app, add it to your phone's home screen from the browser menu.

Does it show the steps, or just the final answer?

Every solve returns a full numbered breakdown. Turn on πŸ’‘ Explain each step after solving to see the reasoning behind each move too.

Can I use this math solver from a photo?

Yes. Tap the camera icon next to the input box, take or upload a photo of a typed or handwritten problem, and SolveStep reads it and solves it. The image is processed entirely in your browser and never uploaded anywhere.

Does it cover geometry, statistics, and matrices too?

Yes. Alongside algebra, equations, and calculus, SolveStep has dedicated solvers for geometry (area, perimeter, volume), statistics (mean, median, mode, standard deviation), and matrices (addition, multiplication, determinants, inverses).

What kinds of problems can it solve?

Arithmetic and fractions, linear and quadratic equations, linear inequalities, expression simplification, square/cube roots, sin/cos/tan/log/ln, percentages, factorials, polynomial derivatives and integrals, simple algebra word problems, plus geometry, statistics, and matrix problems in their own dedicated solvers.

Can it solve word problems as well as equations?

Yes, for common single-unknown phrasings such as "The sum of a number and 7 is 20" or "Twice a number minus 3 is 15." SolveStep translates the sentence into an equation, shows that translation as the first step, then solves it the normal way. Multi-entity word problems (rates, ages, mixtures) aren't supported yet.

Can SolveStep solve inequalities and factor quadratics?

Yes. Type an inequality with <, >, <=, or >= for step-by-step isolation and interval notation. Quadratics with rational roots are automatically factored, and every solved equation is checked by substitution.

Is my data stored or sent anywhere?

No. Every calculation happens locally on your device. Nothing you type or photograph is ever uploaded or logged.

Transparency

What SolveStep does not do

This is a static site with no back end. It is worth being explicit about what that means, because a maths tool asking you to trust it deserves to say plainly what it is not doing.

No accounts, ever

There is no sign-up, no login, and no password to create. SolveStep never asks for your name, email address, phone number or payment details, and there is nowhere on this site to enter them.

Nothing to download

There is no app to install, no extension, no toolbar and no executable. Every tool runs in the browser tab you already have open. The worksheet generator produces a PDF through your browser's own print dialogue.

Nothing leaves your device

Problems you type, and photos you upload to the reader, are processed locally in your browser. They are not transmitted to a server, not logged, and not stored. Closing the tab discards them.

Advertising, stated plainly

This site carries Google AdSense advertising to cover its running costs. Google may set cookies to serve those ads, which is disclosed in the privacy policy along with how to opt out. Nothing you type into a solver is ever passed to an advertiser. That data never leaves your browser in the first place.

Questions about any of this go straight to the person who builds and maintains SolveStep. See contact, or the privacy policy for the full detail. A security contact is published at /.well-known/security.txt.
